Numbers of Animals

The graph below shows the numbers of animals used in the UK every year since 1970. There appears to be an increase in the numbers during 1987 but this apparent increase was due to a change in the law in 1986 when instead of counting the animals used in research the number of procedures involving animals was counted. This broader definition includes things like the use of animals to produce natural product for treatment or research purposes.

The number of animals used is always slightly less than the number of procedures as some animals are used more than once though this doesn't happen very often and is strictly controlled
