The pie chart below shows the numbers of animals used in the UK in one year. The major areas are for food, as companion animals (pets), in medical research and those destroyed as pests (mostly rats and mice) and those cats and dogs abandoned and destroyed by animal welfare organisations.

We can see from the chart that the vast majority, some 97%, of animals are slaughtered and consumed as food. That is approximately 12 animals for every person in the UK every year. In order to investigate diseases, develop and test new medicines and other therapies the biomedical research community uses a very small fraction, about 0.36%, of the animals used in the UK.
